churchpor_webSt Andrew's Church is a delightful 15th century building comprising of nave, chancel and tower. It was largely remodelled in the early 17th century and extended in the late 19th century.

The church is open daily and is often visited by tourists, owing to the connection with Thomas Hardy's novel 'Tess of the D'Urbevilles'. There are three bells of some antiquity (early 17th century). Hardy's 'three bells of Talbot Hayes' - usually chimed for the 10.00 a.m. services (using a chiming frame) and ocassionally rung using ropes when sufficient bellringers are available. The church has many interesting features which are described in detail in a volume prepared by NADFAS for St Andrew's some twenty years ago of which a copy resides in the county archives, the original being in the custody of the church wardens.WS_standrews_5_web

The churchyard is closed and there is a second churchyard to the east of the village.

The fabric of the church, which is Grade 1 listed, is maintained solely from the donations of the small congregation and of villagers of West Stafford. When substantial repair work is required (such as a new roof some years ago) grant aid is sought and there are fundraising ventures. The weather vane has recently been refurbished and a grant towards the cost obtained with the balance being provided by fundraising events.

Services are advertised on the church noticeboard, in Share magazine and on this website. Additionally, there are usually prayers in church at 16.30 on Wednesdays. There is a Prayer Request book at the back of the church (which can be anonymous). All are welcome at these services - just arrive.
